WordPress 3.2 Will Have New System Requirements
WordPress has announced, yesterday, that version 3.2 is expected to have higher system requirements. Currently, WordPress requires that web servers are running PHP 4 and MySQL 4 or higher. However, WordPress 3.2 will no longer support those dated technologies. Instead, it will require that users upgrade their server software to run PHP 5.2 and MySQL 5.0.15 or higher.
What does this mean?
Basically, server administrators will have to update their systems if they have not done so already. They will be unable to install or upgrade to WordPress 3.2 if the system requirements are not met. Most shared hosting providers already support the newer versions. However, if you are running a VPS or dedicated server, you may have to upgrade perform the upgrades yourself. Don’t be alarmed, upgrading PHP and MySQL is not difficult, you can find hundreds of step-by-step tutorials online.
What if I still need PHP 4?
If you still rely on PHP 4, you have, essentially, two options. Firstly, and the most advisable, upgrade or make the necessary changes to the other scripts to work with the newer version of PHP. Your second option is to run both versions of PHP on your server. Again, there are more than enough tutorials online about running multiple versions of PHP on a single server. Before making any decisions, I’d highly suggest that you research the matter and make an educated decision on what would be the best choice in your specific situation.
